NEWS: Care Quality Commission Regulations on Social Care
The Care Quality Commission has introduced a new registration system for all NHS trusts, adult social care providers and independent healthcare providers in England. As of April 2010, providers will be required to register with the Commission under a coherent framework that aligns the regulation of health and adult social care across public and independent sectors in a single system. The stated aim of this new system is "that people can expect services to meet essential standards of quality, to protect their safety and to respect their dignity and rights wherever care is provided, wherever they live".

Regulatory function of the Hearing Aid Council transferred to the Health Professions Council
The Hearing Aid Council (‘HAC’) was established in 1968 by the Hearing Aid Council Act, making it one of the oldest healthcare regulators. After 42 years the HAC transferred its regulatory functions to the Health Professions Council (‘HPC’) on 1 April 2010 and ceased to have regulatory powers on 31 March 2010. Spotlight on CPD – evidence of a regulatory gear change?

Health and Equality
In recent years, regulators have been criticised for placing barriers in the way of disabled people. Good health is a requirement for entry into the professions and ill health can be a ground for finding impairment of fitness to practise. Whilst these requirements might not directly prohibit qualified people from applying, they might foster the perception that disabled people are unwelcome. This article considers recent developments in this area.
